Isla de Ibiza
Discover our historical legacy
Ibiza (Eivissa), was declared in 1999 a world heritage site by Unesco, becoming one of the selected places that deserve protection from this international organisation for its great historical and ecological value.
It offers a rich cultural diversity which has allowed it to receive this recognition, and should be visited by those who really wish to know the pitiusas (Ibiza and Formentera). The locations that form part of this distinction given by the UNESCO are:
- The walled city of Dalt Vila, including the famous castle, was founded by the fenicians nearly 2600 years ago and has been an urban enclosure up until now. Civilizations and cultures –fenicians, romans, muslim, christian, have left their mark on this beautiful and compacted walled city. The current wall was built in the 16th Century, according to the renaissance defense concept by italian engineers. But a walk around the interior of the enclosure will let us discover remains of older walls, particularly remains and towers of a medieval arab wall. Between wonderful italian style houses around tiny streets that stretch and cross between old churches, convents and chapels, the old city of Ibiza is revealed to the eyes of the visitors as a beautiful and harmonious cultural view. At the highest point of the enclosure where you get panoramic views of the port and city, we find the cathedral, built between the 14th and 16th century, together with other buildings which are even older. In one of these old medieval constructions we find the archaeology museum of Dalt Vila, unmissable for any curious visitors. We can also find the contemporary art museum and the Hospitalet showroom.
- The Puig des Molins necropolis of great architectural value, and next to it we find the Puig des Molins museum.
- The Sa Caleta fencician village, a small area by the sea, where the first fenicians that arrived on the island established themselves..
- Lastly, the rich posidonia colonies which extend in the bottom of the ocean in the natural reserve of ses salines de Ibiza y Formentera complete the catalogue of ibicencan spots declared world heritage. The posidonia colonies are considered as the most important colony in the mediterranean coast, due to the oxigen they produce and for serving as a habitat for hundreds of species. Together with the natural reserve of Ses Salines, they are areas of great beauty and interest for tourists and scholars and that are conserved in perfect condition so our visitors can continue to enjoy them year after year in their visits to the island.
Beauty, culture, ecology: three pillars protected and that are the basis of Ibiza´s heritage.
